Thompson -- editor of Dönitz:at Nuremberg: A Reappraisal – tells the story of how Hitler appointed Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz as his successor, shortly before his death, and sketches the monumental challenges faced by the new Reich President as German resistance was collapsing and enemy forces invaded from East and West. The short-lived Dönitz government, Thompson contends, was Germany’s last legitimate regime. On May 23, 1945, the victorious Allied powers summarily dissolved it – in violation of international law – and arrested Dönitz and other leading officials.
